From Hilde

Fifty years of house rules, all written down

My first winter in America was January 1976. Our neighbor's house was seventy-six degrees, every window was sealed with plastic, and there was mold behind the curtains. I thought of my mother's house: cool bedrooms, windows thrown wide open every morning, and a heating bill a fraction of my neighbor's.

My mother wasn't being stubborn. She was following rules, rules every German household knows. I kept house by them for forty years in Ohio, and now my American friends ask me for them. So I wrote them down, the way my mother wrote hers.

Ordnung ist das halbe Leben. Order is half of life. The other half is enjoying the warm, calm home it gives you.

A taste of the book

Three of the eleven heating rules

Rule 1 · Air out wide, not tilted. A window left open a crack all afternoon lets your heat out but barely changes the air, and the cold frame around it is where mold starts. Germans open the windows all the way for about five minutes, several times a day, then close them. The walls keep their heat; the air is fresh and dry.
Rule 2 · Every room has its own temperature. These are the values German agencies recommend:
RoomTemperature
Living room68°F (20°C)
Kitchen64°F (18°C)
Bedroom63°F (17°C), never below 61°F (16°C)
Bathroom72°F (22°C) while in use
Rule 3 · Doors stay closed. Leaving the bedroom door open so warm living-room air can "heat" it sends moisture onto the cold bedroom wall, behind the wardrobe, where mold grows unseen. Warm rooms, doors shut. Cool rooms, doors shut.

The other eight rules, with the tables, checklists and safety notes, are in the book.
